Labor of Love

So this year Caleb told me he wanted a chocolate cake with chocolate icing. A few days later he also said he wanted it to be either a Toy Story or Sonic cake. Couldn't find anything in the stores for either. I looked up ideas online and after seeing how many colors I would need for "Woody" I decided he would be getting a "Sonic the Hedgehog" cake. I found one that used a round pan as the main head and cut up the 2nd as his spikes. But with Mike's strong input I decided to go with a sheet cake. His mom usually makes the cakes for the boys. At least she gave us some pointers last time... I think I should have listened better because it took me all day to make this cake, and I even baked it yesterday. My mother in law puts paper towel on her icing after it sets for a while to make this nice pattern on it. I waited for 15 minutes (which I thought was the right amount of time) but when I went to pull up the paper towel, the icing came with it. I decided to not try it after I re-iced it. Then I turned over my sonic image and followed the lines with piping gel but when I flipped it to transfer the gel..the icing stuck to the paper and all came up again! Third try, Mike suggested I put it in the fridge. I did for over an hour as I put Abe to sleep. But I still decided to try something new, free-handing was going through my mind, but I decided to cut the image in sections and pipe around the edges instead..it worked! Next I had to mix icing and color it. Caleb liked it. That's what mattered :) We went ahead and had a party for him tonight up at the farm house since tomorrow night he will have cupcakes with his AWANA class (I made 24 of them today as well).

You did AWESOME!!!!!! Creative adapt and overcome philosophy! :) Aaron and Megan's birthdays are coming up in March, but I like to plan early! Aaron told me he wanted a Mickey Mouse party on the beach! HA! We'll see what happens! Great job though!

Reminds me a little of the time I made the dump truck cake for Noah's first birthday, though you endured more drama I must say! I was originally going to make the dump truck red, but after almost an entire bottle of red food coloring and the icing was still pink, I decided he'd get a yellow and blue dumptruck instead. :)
